Hannah Montoya: From Childhood Comedy Dreams to Digital Stardom

Hannah Montoya’s journey into the world of online content creation is a testament to perseverance, a passion for comedy, and the transformative power of embracing new platforms. What began as a childhood fascination with making people laugh has blossomed into a burgeoning career, marked by a unique blend of relatable characters and a strategic approach to digital media. Her story is one of evolving aspirations, from the stage to the screen, and a keen understanding of how to connect with an audience in the ever-changing landscape of social media.

The Genesis of a Creator: Early Aspirations and a Love for Comedy

Montoya's creative spark ignited at a remarkably young age. For as long as she'd been an aspiring actress, Montoya had also been an aspiring content creator. At ten years old, she began sharing her labors of love - that is, her self-described “terrible” comedy sketches - on her dad’s YouTube channel. After each upload, she imagined she’d go viral, netting tens or even hundreds of thousands of views for her painstakingly scripted and filmed productions. This early foray into video creation, though humble in its initial reach, laid the foundation for her future success. Even then, the desire to make others laugh and to share her comedic vision was palpable. These childhood endeavors, while "extremely embarrassing" in retrospect, were crucial in nurturing her inherent talent and love for performance. She recalls having had another YouTube channel even before the one she launched at fourteen, indicating a consistent drive to create and share content from a very early age.

Navigating the High School Stage: Challenges and Unexpected Support

While the allure of the stage remained strong, Montoya's experience with formal theatre classes in high school proved to be a significant challenge. Montoya had always dreamed of being onstage, but when she began taking long-awaited theatre classes in high school, the atmosphere was harsher than she’d expected. The environment was harsh, and through the experience, she lost almost all confidence and belief in herself. This period was a "rough patch" for Montoya, primarily involving theatre. The harsh realities of the theatre environment significantly impacted her self-esteem.

Fortunately, this difficult chapter also led to an unexpected source of profound support. Fortunately, there are really great and supportive teachers out there. I was more than lucky to have met my voice instructor outside of the school, who helped build me back up and inspired me to keep going. It immediately became such a source of support and positivity. It couldn’t have come at a better time. This external guidance was instrumental in helping Montoya regain her confidence and reignite her passion for performing and creating.

The Rise of Aunt Jackie and a Character-Driven Universe

With her confidence slowly rebuilding, Montoya found a new avenue for her creative energy: short-form video content. Montoya “played around” on the shortform app for about a year, using it to build a community and help rekindle her passion for acting, she says. This period of exploration proved to be a pivotal moment. Then, in late 2020, she introduced Aunt Jackie, a character chock full of bold, brash New Jersey energy (with a spot-on accent, to boot). The creation of Aunt Jackie marked a significant turning point. This character, with her distinct personality and relatable, albeit exaggerated, traits, resonated deeply with viewers.

With Aunt Jackie’s success in mind, Montoya developed a range of characters based on popular and/or memeable archetypes. These included characters like the “pick me” girl, the high school senior, and the queen bee. This strategy of creating a diverse cast of characters, each embodying recognizable social archetypes, allowed Montoya to explore different facets of human behavior and generate a wide array of comedic scenarios. The success of Aunt Jackie provided the validation and momentum needed to expand her character universe and further engage her growing audience.

The YouTube Renaissance: Leveraging Shorts for Explosive Growth

Having established herself on the short-form platform, Montoya eventually turned her attention back to YouTube, a platform where she had early, albeit less successful, experiences. Having established herself on that platform, Montoya returned to YouTube in May. Her strategy? To leverage the power of YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts has completely revamped my channel, and it has been amazing!! I have prioritized YouTube a few times before, and never truly had anything take off until I started uploading Shorts. The platform was always very intimidating to me, but it feels less daunting making shortform.

The impact of YouTube Shorts on Montoya's channel has been nothing short of transformative. Since May, Montoya has uploaded around 120 videos, which collectively have boosted her channel to 190,000 followers and 75 million views. This rapid growth underscores the effectiveness of Shorts as a tool for audience acquisition and engagement. Montoya notes that while the platform was once intimidating, the nature of shortform content makes it feel more accessible. Not only has it helped with growth in subscribers and views, but it offers me a completely new way to engage with people in a different, more intimate manner. I love it. This suggests that the brevity and directness of Shorts foster a unique connection between creator and viewer, distinct from longer-form content.

The Production Pipeline: Consistency and Efficiency

Montoya's approach to content creation is characterized by a commitment to consistency and an efficient production process. She tries her best to adhere to an off-day, on-day type of schedule. I write and upload videos on different days, which has definitely helped me stay consistent with posting. One day is a writing-designated day where I mock up a few scripts, and try to set up a scene or create a new character. The next day I shoot, edit, and upload. This structured routine ensures a steady stream of content without leading to burnout.

Currently, I am loving shortform! There’s something so much less intimidating to me about uploading a short video versus one over three minutes or so long. This preference for shortform content further streamlines her production, allowing for quicker turnarounds and more frequent posting. This efficient workflow is crucial for maintaining audience engagement and capitalizing on the momentum generated by her viral content.

A Dual Pursuit: Digital Marketing and Theatrical Dreams

Montoya's engagement with social media has not only propelled her content career but has also intertwined with her academic pursuits. Her management at The Network Effect has helped me so much with staying up to date with content, best practices, and monitoring growth and engagement. Social media has definitely changed a lot in my career for the best. She is currently pursuing her major in digital marketing with a minor in theatre. This unique academic path allows her to apply theoretical knowledge directly to her practical experiences as a content creator. I am able to see firsthand what I am learning in school. This integration of education and real-world application provides her with a distinct advantage in understanding audience behavior, marketing strategies, and the overall digital landscape.

The Heart of the Community: Audience Connection

Despite the focus on growth and strategy, Montoya emphasizes that her favorite aspect of content creation is the connection with her audience. Ultimately, my favorite part are the comments. The community I am surrounded by is the absolute best. This sentiment highlights the importance of community building in the digital space. For Montoya, the engagement and feedback from her viewers are not just metrics; they are a source of inspiration and a validation of her work. This genuine appreciation for her audience is a key factor in her sustained success and her ability to create content that resonates.

Looking Ahead: New Characters, Longer Sketches, and a Dream Come True

Montoya's immediate future is focused on continued growth and creative expansion. For my immediate future, I have some new characters I have been working on and I am very excited to introduce them! I am planning on staying consistent with posting on all platforms, and beginning to conceptualize longer video sketches for YouTube. This indicates a desire to diversify her content offerings, moving beyond shortform to explore more elaborate storytelling on her main YouTube channel.

In the long term, Montoya harbors ambitious dreams that bridge her content creation skills with her original passion for acting. In terms of the long run, I hope to pursue comedy and acting! It would be a dream come true. This aspiration suggests that while she has found immense success in the digital realm, her ultimate goal remains rooted in performance and the pursuit of a career in entertainment, leveraging her established online presence as a powerful springboard.
